Aydin Turkey

Aydın is located in the west of Turkey about 65 kilometers east of Kuşadası. Cradled in the midst of Mountain Samsun the area surrounding Aydin has a vast history and culture. Aydın was called Tralleis in ancient times and many of the ruins around the city center date from 2 AD. Aydın Province includes important archeological sites like Priene, Miletos, Magnesia, Didyma, Aphrodisias and Heraklia which are visited by crowds of tourists every year. The local museum in Aydin is a great place for visitors to start as it displays artifacts from the different periods of the city history.

In Aydın are the impressive remains of the Gümrukönü Hanı - a huge medieval caravanserai that once hosted travelers traveling the Silk Road. Next to it are the remains of an L-shaped double hamam with lanterns on the domes built in 1767 by Ahmet Paşa. The small 14th-century shrine of İsmail, a son of Alihan Baba who had settled in nearby Tire but who decided to make his home in Aydın. His tomb is the oldest surviving Turkish structure in the city. Just past it are the remains of the Zincirli Han, which dates back to 1708. It's no longer possible to enter it, but the upstairs rooms are said to still have their fireplaces and have niches in which traveling salesmen could store their belongings.

Aydın has been a home to many civilizations and the city is rich in folklore and legends. Aydın is also the home of Zeybek folk art. This is a special type of war dance which is performed in a ring to resemble birds. The Zeybek is performed to sounds of the Kiteli and other Turkish folk instruments. The folk songs of Aydın are famously short so there is a popular saying in the Aegean region when you want someone to stop talking - is to say... 'Keep it short, make it an Aydın tune...'
